About 'debt forgiveness for student loans'|Student Loan Debt Forgiveness: Avoiding Moral Hazard
As the time approached when I would be graduating from college after 12 years of (on and off) study, that great feeling of accomplishment was quickly overshadowed by the gigantic $50,000 student loan gorilla poking me in the face. How was I going to make this work? After a few years of forbearance (it's a pretty word, almost like forgiveness, except for the BEAR in the middle of it), the time was overdue for me to start paying off my loans. One very difficult night I sat down and added up all of my loans. I called Direct Loans and Sallie Mae and consolidated all the loans I could. Since I have private loans with high interest rates which could not be consolidated with my federally backed loans, I decided to start paying those off first. My federal loans are in forbearance; sorry federal government. I am grateful that I enjoy my job and that it is in my field of study; but it's not enough. In addition to working full time I also refinish furniture, my wife sells original hand crocheted items, and I'm starting to break into the blogging game. Consolidate what you can as soon as you can, pay off high interest loans first, and if getting a higher degree will guarantee you better earning potential (and is worth the further debt you will be in) then I say go for it. If your income doesn't allow you to pay more than the minimum on your student loans, watch your spending, turn a hobby into extra income, sell crap metal and aluminum cans, or do whatever you can to pay off those loans as soon as possible. Fortunately, since I am considered a public servant, through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, the government will forgive my loans after 120 consecutive payments. Hate to disappoint any and all who were looking forward to reading a story about someone who found a hidden secret to paying off their loans, but the fact is, the same amount of hard work it took to actually get your degree is the same amount of hard work and discipline it will take to pay off your student loans. Be honest with your debt, use a common sense approach to your spending habits, pay off more than the minimum and you will soon (relative term) pay off your student loans. |
