About 'graduate school loans 2013'|Pennsylvania Education Policy Roundup for October 16, 2013: Property tax reform a mixed bag for PA schools, businesses

In               2009               I               had               intentions               of               attending               graduate               school.

The               plan               was               to               go               back               for               a               Master               of               Arts               in               English               Literature               or               to               become               a               registered               dietician,               depending               on               course               requirements               and               whether               I               could               receive               financial               grants.

Realistically,               the               grants               outweighed               the               course               requirements.
However,               after               a               full               year               of               talking               to               dozens               of               guidance               counselors               and               financial               aid               advisers               I               learned               that               grad               students               are               not               eligible               for               grants.

Why?

According               to               the               financial               advisers               master's               degree               holders               earn               more               money               so               they               can               repay               the               loans.
At               the               time,               my               family               was               living               off               of               my               husband's               single               income.

The               cost               of               child               care               was               more               money               than               I               would               earn               so               it               was               beneficial               for               me               to               stay               at               home               with               our               kids.

With               the               tight               income,               there               was               nothing               to               spare,               even               for               graduate               school.
Delaying               graduate               school               was               painful,               but               best               to               reduce               debt
Although               I               was               eligible               for               student               loans,               this               was               one               route               I               didn't               want               to               take.

10               years               after               graduating               from               Georgia               Southern               University               (GSU)               I               was               still               paying               on               student               loans               from               my               undergrad               program.

The               thought               of               additional               student               loans               added               to               what               I               already               owed               was               daunting.

For               me,               it               just               seemed               irresponsible               to               create               thousands               of               more               dollars               in               debt               when               I               could               barely               make               my               monthly               undergrad               student               loan               payments.
Although,               master's               degree               holders               earn               more               money,               and               my               student               loans               were               consolidated               years               before               with               a               3%               fixed               interest               rate,               I               was               still               worried               about               owing               more               money.

It               was               clear               that               grad               school               would               have               to               wait.

               Fast-forward               to               the               year               2013
Fast               forward               four               years               to               2013,               and               I               still               have               not               begun               school.

This               is               not               necessarily               a               bad               thing.

My               goal               is               once               again               to               earn               a               Master's               of               Science               in               Nutrition               and               Dietetics.

Why               such               a               long               wait?

Because               2013               offered               options               and               opportunities               since               my               babies               are               now               school               aged               children.

I               work               during               the               mornings               when               they               are               in               school.

I'm               home               long               before               they               get               out               of               school,               which               saves               a               lot               of               money.
How               does               this               make               a               difference               to               pay               for               school?
This               schedule               saves               us               nearly               $12,000               or               more               a               year               in               child               care               services,               and               allows               us               to               spend               quality               time               with               the               kids.

Besides               more               time               and               money,               the               schedule               is               also               free               for               studying.
Between               my               income,               and               the               money               we               save               on               child               care,               this               is               enough               to               cover               classes               and               books               for               grad               school.

My               plan               is               to               take               no               more               than               two               classes               a               semester               in               order               to               pay               for               the               classes               in               cash.

It               is               also               so               I               don't               feel               overwhelmed               with               classes,               and               an               active               family.
