About 'huffington post student loan'|How student loan debt may be hurting the economic recovery
COMMENTARY | It would be too obvious to be news if anyone but our nation's highest law enforcement officer said it, but this just in: the Republican Party is eager and willing to leap on whatever they think will disparage President Barack Obama. In an interview, attorney general Eric Holder stated his belief that the Republican-led House's decision to make him the first attorney general found in contempt of Congress was meant to transform him into a "proxy" that the president could be attacked through, according to the Washington Post. He claimed that all that the Justice Department is being retaliated against for recent actions on issues like immigration, voting rights, and gay marriage, and that the investigation into the botched Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' "Fast and Furious" gun running operation and subsequent contempt vote has become highly publicized political theater. It is only an allegation, but unfortunately one with history supporting it. In an election year with Congress' approval rating on life support there would be no recent move safe enough to attack with the same aggression Fast and Furious and the Affordable Care Act have been. President Obama's decision to embrace same-sex marriage, temporarily decriminalize illegal immigrants who grew up in America, and then successfully pressuring Congress into passing the freeze on student loan interest rates won he and the Democrats support among groups that haven't warmed up to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney just yet. On top of that, the former Massachusetts' governor is bringing no new economic policies, just mildly reworked trickle-down Reaganomics, and will have to deal the fact that a good number of Americans remember that financial firms like Bain Capital helped scuttle the U.S. economy in the final years of George W. Bush's presidency. Using the attorney general to hit the president would be no different than their attempt to attack the president for his healthcare law. The landmark healthcare law was first labeled Obamacare and then vilified as a threat to free enterprise. It is a strange coincidence that right as the two-year siege on Obamacare's constitutionality was about to end with the Supreme Court making the GOP's most-targeted nemesis the constitutionally recognized health-care law of the land the House moved to find the attorney general in contempt of Congress. President Obama's adversaries frequently use his policies as avenues to make wild attacks and outlandish claims about his character. Often it appears that conservative GOP lawmakers believe their voters would rather they spend their time stopping President Obama's policies instead of using it to do more to deliver on their promise of creating jobs than advocate a return to the deregulated financial climate that helped drive our country's economic downturn. The GOP is right to pursue those culpable for the deaths stemming from Fast and Furious. But to make the investigation more than just an anti-Obama attack, the Bush administration officials who, according to the Huffington Post, started the "gunwalking" tactics used in Fast and Furious should be held in just as much contempt as Eric Holder. |
