About 'student loan access'|The dark side of student loans part 1.

The               FAFSA               application               form               is               the               most               commonly               completed               document               by               those               who               are               about               to               enter               or               are               still               in               college               requesting               student               financial               assistance.

The               FAFSA               not               only               determines               a               student's               eligibility               for               federal               student               loan               assistance,               but               also               provides               information               that               may               allow               a               student               to               get               government               grants,               such               as               the               Pell               Grant.

What               is               the               difference               between               being               awarded               student               "aid"               and               being               awarded               a               "grant?

It's               simple,               "aid"               (read               loans)               has               to               be               paid               back;               grants               don't.
That               being               said,               the               FAFSA               form               is               available               online,               or               can               be               obtained               from               high               school               or               career               counselors,               or               on               college               campuses.

The               form               encompasses               multiple               pages,               and               requires               a               lot               of               knowledge               or               access               to               a               lot               of               the               student               and               student's               family               financial               information.
               The               student               has               it               "easy".

He               or               she               will               only               have               needed               to               have               chosen               at               least               one               college               which               he               or               she               would               like               to               attend,               and               will               need               tuition               figures               from               that               school.
The               parents,               on               the               other               hand,               will               need               all               sorts               of               financial               documents.

These               will               include,               but               may               not               (and               probably               will               not)               be               limited               tax               documents               for               the               past               year,               expense               documents               for               the               past               year,               bank               account               and               other               financial               institution               information,               and               other               identifying               and               qualifying               information.

Hopefully,               someone               in               the               family               has               kept               up               with               the               location               of               these               and               other               necessary               papers,               and               will               be               able               to               produce               them               when               the               time               comes.
All               the               problems               and               frustrations               encountered               when               completing               these               forms,               however,               is               worth               it               when               the               student               is               notified               that               he               or               she               is               eligible               to               receive               federal               funds               for               a               college               education.

If               the               funding               comes               in               the               form               of               a               grant,               which,               if               you               remember,               does               NOT               have               to               be               repaid,               so               much               the               better.
However,               if               it               does               come               in               the               form               of               other               types               of               "aid",               that's               good,               too.

At               least               some               of               the               expenses               of               a               college               education               are               being               met,               and,               as               everyone               knows,               having               a               college               education               means               that               one               is               more               likely               to               get               a               higher-paying               job.

At               least               then,               the               (former)               student               will               be               able               to               pay               back               the               money               that               was               "given"               to               "aid"               him               or               her               in               obtaining               that               degree.
So,               take               a               deep               breath,               help               find               those               papers,               and               start               the               FAFSA               application               process.

It               will               be               worth               it               all               when               you               receive               that               college               diploma.
